    Nursing

    Welcome to the MDH Nursing,

I am Katie Swenson RN,  Chief Nursing Officer. The nursing staff at Meade District Hospital is comprised of highly trained and educated Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nurse Aides with several years of experience. Registered Nurses are licensed with ACLS, PALS, and TNCC at a minimum.  All nursing staff are licensed with Basic Life Support.

    • Nursing Staff

We strive to provide our patients and their families’ service excellence by providing patient and family engagement. We pride ourselves on being patient and family advocates; assisting the patients any way possible during their health care journey. Our nursing staff is available 24-hours a day prepared to assist you, your family, and our community in time of need, whether you are in the emergency room, inpatient or outpatient. There is a minimum of two (2) RNs and one (1) information assistant/certified nurse’s aide, in-house, at all times. Our ideal staffing is three (3) nurses and three (3) certified nurses aides to provide top notch care our patients and families deserve.

There are 20 high low beds with capabilities of wireless alarms, sitting positions, and weighing options. A negative pressure and positive pressure room are available, as well as a special care room, right off the nurses’ station.  All rooms are equipped with computers for bed-side charting promoting time spent with patients.

AVHS MDH nursing staff strives to provide our patients and their families’ service excellence by engaging and empowering the patient and family.  Bedside reporting is done utilizing the SBAR format: This is done at the bedside to provide a secure and comforting manner of shift transition. We recommend our patients and families ask questions and express their goals and expectations of the care they are receiving. Currently, we are in a phase of painting our patient care areas. Once this project is complete communication boards will be displayed in each patient room. The boards will portray hourly rounding, patient goals, and contact information. This is another resource to empower patients and their families to feel involved and to understand what is happening with their loved one.

AVHS MDH nursing staff remains up-to-date with regulations by attending educational sessions and providing teach back. AVHS offers monthly education sessions, policy reviews, quality improvement implementation, and annual skills competency check-offs for our nursing staff. In healthcare, where the only constant is the compassionate care the clinical staff, including nursing, will provide you, the rules and regulations are a revolving door of change. Our nursing staff strives to maintain and provide the best standard of care for you and your loved ones.  We also provide a discharge packet with patient portal instructions, health profile information, infection prevention information, medication teaching, and your discharge planning checklist. Our ultimate goal is your safety in returning home or transitioning safely and knowledgeably into the next step from our care.

  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
    •

    Pulmonary Rehabilitation

    What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a supervised program that includes exercise training, disease, and medication education, and breathing techniques for individuals who have certain lung conditions that prevent them from doing daily living activities. Pulmonary rehabilitation will help you manage your disease, increase your stamina, and decrease your breathlessness.

At Meade District Hospital, our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Director will educate you on how to pace your breathing with activities and prepare an exercise program just for you. The exercises will begin at a level that you can handle. The amount of time you exercise will be increased through time and the level of difficulty will change based on your ability. As your muscles get stronger, you will exercise longer with less breathlessness and exhaustion.

    Who can partcipate?

The admission criteria for the program requires a physician order. Patients who benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation include those who have or have had:

    • Asthma
    • Bronchiectasis
    • Chronic Bronchitis
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
    • Emphysema
    • Interstitial Fibrosis
    • Lung cancer or surgery
    • Lungreductionsurgery
    • Lung transplant
    • Pneumonia
    • Pulmonary hypertension
    • Sarcoidosis

Patients are assessed and tested for placement in the program. After the initial assessment, a monitored exercise and education program will begin.

    The benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation may improve your quality of life by:

    • Reducing shortness of breath
    • Increasing exercise tolerance
    • Promoting a sense of well-being
    • Decrease hospitalizations
    • Reducing emotional stress, depression, and anxiety
    • Decreasing blood pressure along with improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels

Although Pulmonary Rehabilitation can't cure lung disease, it can be of great benefit.

What our Pulmonary Rehabilitation program offers

    Educational Programs

The education classes will provide information about:

    • Breathing retraining
    • Diet, nutrition, and weight management
    • Importance of exercise
    • Medications, including drug action, side effects, using an inhaler, and self-care techniques
    • Strategies for managing breathing problems
    • Symptom assessment and knowledge about when to seek medical treatment
    • Understanding and using oxygen therapy

    Monitored and Supervised Exercise

A physical activity plan is tailored to your needs. Exercise helps improve endurance and muscle strength.

    Psychosocial Support

People with chronic lung diseases are more prone to depression, anxiety, and other emotional problems. By participating in a rehab program and gaining control of your health can help lower your stress, anxiety, and depression levels.

The Cardiopulmonary Director at Meade District Hospital, Jessica Alexander, RRT, would be glad to visit with you about our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Call Meade District Hospital at (620) 873-2141.

    • X-Ray

In 2015, MDH installed a new OTC12 Digital Radiographic System in the Radiology Department.

Patients will benefit from faster exam times and a comfortable, safe experience during their x-ray procedures. The advanced digital detector technology provides high resolution images while reducing the amount of radiation per exposure by more than half from older technology.
Hospital X-Ray Technologists also have the flexibility to utilize the digital detector in other areas of the hospital where digital technology isn’t yet available such as the emergency room, OR, or patient rooms. In these cases, a portable x-ray machine is utilized with the digital receptor for patients unable to come to the Radiology Department.
    • CT Scans

If you need more information than an x-ray can provide, we have a 16-slice Toshiba CT scanner available 7 days a week.

A computerized tomography (CT) scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images, or slices, of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body.

    • NEW 3D Mammography

Benefits of our 3D mammography include:
      • Most accurate breast cancer screening available.
      • Detects more cancers at earlier stages than standard 2D.
      • Reduces the need for additional testing or recalls.

We strive to make mammograms as comfortable as possible!

    • Mobile MRI

You no longer need to travel if your physician orders an MRI. Every Wednesday we are able to provide MRI services via a traveling service. This is a great option for diagnosing internal issues without the risks of radiation. With a physician order, you can schedule your MRI appointment by calling 620-873-2141.

    • Nuclear Medicine

In 2016, MDH purchased a new GE Millennium camera capable of doing heart studies, thyroid scans, bone scans, and hida (gall bladder) scans. This technology compliments our other diagnostic tests. Where an MRI or a CT scan shows us what an organ looks like, nuclear medicine is able to show us how that organ is actually functioning. This can be incredibly important when diagnosing some types of heart problems.

    • Ultrasound

Our Phillips ultrasound machine is available 4 days a week Mon-Wed and Fri, and is capable of Echocardiograms, vascular ultrasounds, upper abdominal ultrasound, testicular ultrasound, renal ultrasound and bladder ultrasounds.

The sonogram/ultrasound technology uses high-frequency sound waves to make images of the internal structures and organs.

    • Bone Density Testing

With our GE Lunar machine, we are able to offer DEXA scans to screen for osteoporosis and predict your risk of bone fractures. This can also be referred to as an osteogram, bone density test, and bone densiometry. It is not to be confused with nuclear bone scans which we also offer.

      DEXA scans are available Monday-Friday.
