I am Steve Salyer, RN, and I manage our Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Through this program we are able to help you recover from a cardiac event and prevent a second one as well as help manage peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Yes. Because cardiac rehab is a form of medical treatment, a doctor’s referral is required. Your Primary Care Physician or Cardiologist will be able to provide a referral.
Yes. We report your progress to your referring doctor.
Welcome to the Lab! I am Tammy Bird, Director of the Laboratory Department, and I am proud to provide you with a comprehensive service menu to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses. Most testing is completed within hours, but when a test requires a special reference laboratory, the results are typically available within 2-3 days.
My laboratory works closely with physicians in the surrounding areas as well as throughout the state. Test results can be mailed or faxed directly to physicians, which allows patients to undergo tests close to home even if their physician is outside of the community. All normal test results are also available to patients through our patient portal.
All of our laboratory technologists and technicians are specially trained and certified. In addition, they maintain high quality control standards for each test they perform to ensure absolute accuracy and reliability.
I am Michele Dewell, RN, head of the AVHS Friend Care Program. Our service is available for anyone who needs it. There are no requirements or restrictions. Assistance will be provided to you in the home in a professional, effective, and compassionate manner.
This service is NOT covered by Medicare.

Welcome to the MDH Nursing,
I am Sunshine Hicks RN MSN, Chief Nursing Officer. The nursing staff is highly trained and educated Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nurse Aides with several years of experience. Registered Nurses are licensed with ACLS, PALS, and TNCC at a minimum. All nursing staff are licensed with Basic Life Support.
We strive to provide our patients and their families’ service excellence by providing patient and family engagement. We pride ourselves on being patient and family advocate’s; assisting the patients any way possible during their health care journey. Our nursing staff is available 24-hours a day prepared to assist you, your family, and our community in time of need, whether you are in the emergency room, inpatient or outpatient. There is a minimum of two (2) RNs and one (1) information assistant/certified nurse’s aide, in-house, at all times. Our ideal staffing is three (3) nurses and three (3) certified nurses’ aides to provide top notch care our patients and families deserve.
There are 20 high low beds with capabilities of wireless alarms, sitting positions, and weighing options. A negative pressure and positive pressure room are available, as well as a special care room, right off the nurses’ station. All rooms are equipped with computers for bed-side charting promoting time spent with patients.
AVHS MDH nursing staff strives to provide our patients and their families’ service excellence by engaging and empowering the patient and family. Bedside reporting is done utilizing the SBAR format: This is done at the bedside to provide a secure and comforting manner of shift transition. We recommend our patients and families ask questions and express their goals and expectations of the care they are receiving. Currently, we are in a phase of painting our patient care areas. Once this project is complete communication boards will be displayed in each patient room. The boards will portray hourly rounding, patient goals, and contact information. This is another resource to empower patients and their families to feel involved and to understand what is happening with their loved one.
AVHS MDH nursing staff remains up-to-date with regulations by attending educational sessions and providing teach back. AVHS offers monthly education sessions, policy reviews, quality improvement implementation, and annual skills competency check-offs for our nursing staff. In healthcare, where the only constant is the compassionate care the clinical staff, including nursing, will provide you, the rules and regulations are a revolving door of change. Our nursing staff strives to maintain and provide the best standard of care for you and your loved ones. We also provide a discharge packet with patient portal instructions, health profile information, infection prevention information, medication teaching, and your discharge planning checklist. Our ultimate goal is your safety in returning home or transitioning safely and knowledgeably into the next step from our care.

Welcome to Radiology! I am Brad Bird, the Director of the Radiology Department. I am proud to offer many advanced diagnostic imaging solutions to help our medical providers diagnose illnesses and injuries quickly and accurately.
My staff and I work closely with your primary care physician to ensure all symptoms are considered to determine a precise diagnosis.
If you have any questions about a diagnostic test, please contact me at 620.873.2141.
In 2015, MDH installed a new OTC12 Digital Radiographic System in the Radiology Department.
If you need more information than an x-ray can provide, we have a 16-slice Toshiba CT scanner available 7 days a week.
A computerized tomography (CT) scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images, or slices, of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body.
With our GE film/screen mammography unit, available Monday-Thursday, we have the ability to capture high-quality images capable of detecting even subtle changes in breast tissue, allowing us to provide an earlier and more accurate diagnosis for breast cancer.
You no longer need to travel if your physician orders an MRI. Every Wednesday we are able to provide MRI services via a traveling service. This is a great option for diagnosing internal issues without the risks of radiation. With a physician order, you can schedule your MRI appointment by calling 620-873-2141.
In 2016, MDH purchased a new GE Millennium camera capable of doing heart studies, thyroid scans, bone scans, and hida (gall bladder) scans. This technology compliments our other diagnostic tests. Where an MRI or a CT scan shows us what an organ looks like, nuclear medicine is able to show us how that organ is actually functioning. This can be incredibly important when diagnosing some types of heart problems.
Our Phillips ultrasound machine is available 4 days a week Mon-Wed and Fri, and is capable of Echocardiograms, vascular ultrasounds, upper abdominal ultrasound, testicular ultrasound, renal ultrasound and bladder ultrasounds.
The sonogram/ultrasound technology uses high-frequency sound waves to make images of the internal structures and organs.
With our GE Lunar machine, we are able to offer DEXA scans to screen for osteoporosis and predict your risk of bone fractures. This can also be referred to as an osteogram, bone density test, and bone densiometry. It is not to be confused with nuclear bone scans which we also offer.
DEXA scans are available Monday-Friday.
Welcome to the MDH Respiratory Department Page! The director of the RT department is Paula Lubbers, RRT. Paula has been the Director since 2004 and has been a Respiratory Therapist since 1993. There are also two other registered therapists in the department. Together we provide testing and treatments to preserve and improve overall lung function for those with lung disorders. We also have Breathe E-Z Medical Equipment located in the Respiratory Department which supplies equipment such as home Oxygen, CPAP/BiPAP machines and supplies, walkers and much more.
Whether it’s general lung function or a sleep disorder, we have several ways to diagnose your specific respiratory condition.
For lung function, our Respiratory Department has the ability to conduct Pulmonary Function Tests to see how your lungs take in and release air and how well they distribute oxygen into the blood stream.
An Oximetry Test is a commonly used at-home test that provides basic information on how well you are oxygenating. This device records data about heart rate and blood oxygen saturation and will show abnormal drops in oxygen and abnormal increases or decreases in heart rate.
We also do outpatient and inpatient care that includes: Breathing treatments, inhaler education, Arterial Blood Gases, electroencephalograms (EEG) and other services. (All with a Physician’s Order)
If you aren’t getting a good night’s rest, you aren’t alone. A 2009 survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that:
20 percent of Americans report getting less than six hours of sleep per night, up from 13 percent in 2001;
Those who report getting eight hours of sleep or more per night dropped from 38 percent in 2001 to 28 percent.
While some sleep problems are caused by things we can control (ex: too much caffeine, alcohol consumption or staying up too late to watch TV) some are caused by medical conditions.
Here at MDH we have a fully equipped Sleep lab that is used to help diagnose sleep related disorders including sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and insomnia.
For more information about the Sleep Lab, contact the Respiratory Department at
